Unmentioned

These are the things that are never discussed; not in public, not between ourselves.

We do not speak of how the wasting now lets us see the curvature of the metacarpals in your hands, how I can see the fine variations and concaves of your skull through your paper-thin skin.

We never talk about the fact we can see your heart beating through your frail chest or your pulse quickening through the veins in your wrists.

We never mention the intrusion of noise the bed makes as it repeatedly adjusts the pressure in the air mattress under your body—the last resort against the breakdown of the integrity of your skin—a never-won war.

We do not how to respond as your breath slows, drags, trips, stops and then lunges painfully forward again. When your breath stops, ours does as well—waiting to see if your body will involuntarily jerk itself back into the rhythm of breathing, this time.

At some point, it just won’t. I asked the nurse.

I sit here and think of blood and piss and shit and drool. I think of watching another sleep and of trying to guess what a non-verbal person needs or wants. How mothers bouncing cranky infants at playgroup or story time will compare battle wounds and horror stories, but when it comes to the end of life (and not the beginnings of it) we are silent.

Deathly silent.

These end-of-life truths, so similar to the care we each require in our infancy, they are things of which we do not want to speak. We’ll tell everyone about birth plans and spit up and blowouts and the overwhelming emotions of the major life-changing event of birth, but the facts of death go unmentioned.

Self-Promotion is not my Strong Suit

I may not be good at it, but I’m going to give it a shot, nonetheless. I am going to pimp myself out for a moment. And I’m going to ask for your help.

Someone, please hold me.

J has been after me to take myself more seriously this year; as a writer, as an employee, as a person interested in learning everything I come across—in general, as a human being. I may not be big on resolutions, and I wouldn’t categorize J as being big on them, either, but what he keeps cramming down my earholes telling me is that this is my time now. This is the time for me to grow. This year, I need to make a leap.

So, I did something I would never consider doing before. I submitted some of my own work to the BlogHer13 Voices of the Year competition. And yes, this means I’m strongly considering attending this conference for the first time in my life. Please let me know if you would be willing to hide in the corners with me—I’d like to know I’ll meet some like-minded individuals, in person.

If you are so inclined, I would ask you to take a look at my submitted posts, and vote for them if you like them. If you are even further inclined, please feel free to share one or more post with your people, and ask them to vote as well. Even constructive criticism would be helpful; I’m currently in that place where one sits in the corner of their mind in the fetal position, wishing someone would tell them that this will all be okay, because they’ve put themselves out there in a very public way.

Here are the posts I submitted:

Now, I solemnly vow to not bug you relentlessly, begging for votes.  Also, I promise that upcoming posts will involve an update on my grandfather, a snapshot of Ant philosophizing while on pain medication for a sprained shoulder (no, sadly, I did not record it), and things that are, in general, much more worthy of reading.

Of course, if you have any BlogHer advice, this would be a great time to share it. Seriously. Chatting people up at conferences for work has never bothered me, but the idea of talking about my boring-old-self…

Ugh. We Need Some Funnies.

Are you as sick of the Republican National Convention as I am? How about the political ads? Todd Akin? Oh, and the weird weather? The heat? The impending full moon? People in the world acting bat-shit crazy? The suddenly having to get up before dawn to get the kids to school? The Mayan doomsday right around the corner?

Yeah, I am too. I needed a freaking laugh. Or five. And then, once I had them, I thought I might share them with you, because, hey, it’s good to share, right?

What Is Keeping Me From Posting?

I’m so glad you asked. I made a chart to show you.

Please, no one point out to me that in the time it took for me to make this chart that I could have written you a post. Also, make sure to read the posts I wrote over at Sprocket Ink this week about the Devil stealing children’s souls in the lunch line and, of course, how only stupid people talk about magical vaginas. That should be enough to placate you for a little while, right?

Just be thankful that I’m not posting pictures of my gnarly broken finger. It’s my middle finger. And it’s pretty gross. I came *this* close to posting it!

Yes, I’ve Told J That We’ll be Going Back Very Soon!

I just got back from spending five days in Chicago on a business trip. Each year, right before the start of school, there’s a huge conference (THIS is why I can rarely, if ever, go to BlogHer) for my work, where we get to meet up with current faculty, students, and alums. It’s a blast, but at the same time, it’s work, and the work days are long. This is one of those conferences where meetings start at 7 AM, and things start winding down at midnight.

It makes up for missing the Cheesy Bloggers meet up earlier this summer. Kind of.

Our hotel was right on Michigan Avenue. Obviously, this was a plot to torture me. So, while I spent the vast majority of my days working my ass off, I did get a few chances to sneak out and take some pictures and look through a couple of stores. Which I am now sharing with you. Which is about the level of post I’m able to contribute today.

I’m still freaking exhausted! Plus, I’ve had my hands busy in getting Ant into all of his sports for the fall (sheesh!) and fixing K’s schedule (not only will he be a sophomore in high school, but now he is dual enrolled in college. I’m not joking.) and getting ready for school to start.

People keep asking me if I’m ready for school to start. I can’t decide whether to laugh or cry when they ask this.

But I digress. Here’s a whirlwind tour of pictures of Chicago, which I am currently using to entice J to take me back there again. Just him and me. In the very near future.

I got to take the train, for the first time in my life. It was awesome.
Especially since I had a party room...
I had a room with a view of the lake... Oh, and it was raining
(RAIN!) and cool in Chi-town.
J was frantically trying to cancel my credit cards, to no avail.
Then there was amazing food-- like ricotta filled gnocci...
And the usual suspects in sightseeing...
Navy Pier
Union Station, waiting for the train back home.
All in all, it was an excellent trip. And seriously, J, we're repeating it. Very Soon.

I Finally Did It

I flipped the switch, and now it’s live.

It’s dawn on my birthday. Outside the window directly to the right of my desk, I can see the sunlight just starting to brighten the sky through gathering clouds. My plan had been to sleep in today, but I awoke at three this morning, and immediately knew that was a pipe dream. I have a four day weekend that I’ve dedicated to writing. Might as well jump right in.

As my birthday present to you, as promised, I am now posting some of the fiction I’m writing. Because I’m tired of hiding a large chunk of what I write in fear of ridicule.

This is a work in progress. As in, this is first draft stuff right here. I’d love to have your commentary and constructive criticism. Or a book deal. Or an agent. Whatever. Most importantly, I’m hoping for some accountability—because if I make this public to you, and you’re expecting updates, then I actually have to finish a story, and not just let it fizzle out, right?

You can read the first installment here:

At the top you'll see a new page titled "Work In Progress." You'll find subsequent installments listed there, in order. My goal is to post one or two each week, so please make sure to check back for more.

Guess Where I Am, or Will Be, or Whatever… Nevermind. It’s Too Much Work

That’s right. I’m at Cheesy Bloggers today! Go forth and read (or re-read) my post on the Summer of Non-fiction.

Or you can read the articles I wrote for Sprocket Ink this week. I wrote about Adele saving the life of a child, and also how you can survive when Summer attacks you or the month of June wants you dead.

Given that the month of June seems to want ME dead, I am taking the rest of the month off (with my boss’s blessing. I think she’s afraid it may spill over to my co-workers). That’s right. No work. No writing. No housecleaning, even. Me: parking my butt and enjoying a week of summer, the way it should be; the way it was when I was a kid. I’m sure you understand, right? Or perhaps insanely jealous.

I’ll be reading. Because it’s summer. And there may be some pool time. And I’m sure they’ll be stories and pictures once I return.

In the interim, however (aka, next week) I will have guest posters, thanks to my lovely fellow Sprocket Ink writers! The theme is summer vacation, and I think you’ll like what they have to say. I know I’m looking forward to your responses to their posts!
