Now that our busy fall semester is slowly wrapping up, I’ve been
left a little bit of time to think. To reflect, if you will. To consider
something more than immediate needs and the priority lists I’ve so desperately clung
to during recent months to keep from forgetting anything that needs to be done
at work or for the kids.
And I’ve realized something. Something horrible. Something I swore
to never do and that I do with increasing frequency. I’ve put some things on
the back burner. Namely, myself.
Yeah, let’s just come on out and say it. I’ve totally let myself
go. It’s not just the fact that I think I’ve probably gained 10 pounds in one
semester, putting all those freshmen on campus working on their 15 to shame. It’s
not just my ‘Shave my legs? Are you kidding me? It’s 30 degrees outside and I
can use all the insulation I can get, dammit!’ schedule.
I was catching up on a little blog and Facebook reading last
night, commenting, etc. and I noticed that everyone has these wonderful family holiday
pictures and blog style revamps, and everything along those lines, and I’ve…
well, I’ve been wondering to myself if it would be really that bad to wear my
yoga pants to work. Would they be able to tell they were really yoga pants?
Is HillJean
wearing yoga pants in her holiday fashion post? Nope. Do you think Sarah from Nerdy Apple is going for the world
record of the most consecutive days worn of ratty Uggs? I doubt it.

I’ve not done it. Yet. The yoga pants thing. Mainly because none
of my yoga pants have pockets, and I really live for pockets to stash shit in while
at work. So I’ve stuck with jeans. And my Uggs.
In all seriousness for a moment… I haven’t painted my toenails for
two months now, I can’t say the last time I fixed my hair (much less had it cut
and styled—which was last June), and while I have nice clothes, I tend to just
pull whatever laundry has been hanging out in the dryer for the last two days
and throw that on in the ten minutes I have before I need to leave for work.
Makeup? Are you freaking kidding me? You’re lucky I have chapstick in my purse.
I put on earrings today for the first time in forever to distract
from the fact that I didn’t want to do anything with my hair other than ensure
it would not get in my face for the rest of the day. I woke up with a mouthful
of it this morning. And I don’t think the earrings thing is really going to
work.

It’s been awfully dry in these parts as of late, and I finally got
around this weekend to looking for some lotion, only to realize, there’s no
lotion in our house, and probably hasn’t been since last winter.
Folks, I’ve been stuck in this rut for so long I think I’m going
to need an intervention. A style intervention. Send help! Send ideas! Send me
tips! For hair, for clothes, for accessories, for nails, for makeup… anything!
I’ll take any ideas you’ve got! Just not ideas for scarves (why is it all about
the scarves this year?) because the only time I’m not a scarf hater is when it’s
less than 15 degrees outside.
What little things do you do to break yourself out of a rut? What
are some of your favorite items or accessories that come out during the
holidays? How do you keep yourself looking put together when the schedule is
packed and the holiday heat is on?
Seriously. I’m one pair of sweatpants at Ant’s basketball practice
away from complete and utter fashion failure… I need reinforcements!

Yup, S, just get it out.
ReplyDeleteMe, too: I can't believe what I look like right now.
blech.
Ugh. So it's not just me? Is it a winter thing? A holidays thing? What is going on with me???
DeleteWe could start a support group...
oh hon, hon...you gotta step it up. I work at home and my hair looks better than that. Believe me, I'm not a put-together girl but if I can do it, you can too (did you feel the rah rah cheer in there)? You gotta find a little space for you, to have me time, it helps with the overall zen of your life. take small steps...the hair. clips or ponytail...not both. start there. may the force be with you.
ReplyDeleteOkay. Baby steps. Maybe hair tomorrow. Maybe breaking the ugly Ugg habit by the end of the week... Wish me luck!
ReplyDeleteUm. blame the inner geologist and country girl in me, but I don't shave often in the winter. My "style" includes wearing slacks, nice top, and shoes (I think the rule is brown shoes with brown/tan clothes, and black shoes are ok with everything else? So I have one brown pair of shoes and one black pair of shoes). I do curl my hair daily, I never wear makeup, and I seldom remember lotion - which makes it harder to get the white-board marker off my hand after I use my palm as an eraser 1500 times per day. I really should be wearing contacts daily but I'm too lazy.

I do go out and get a couple of new tops each semester. I've been toying with commissioning some necklaces made of cool rock chips (several of my friends are gifted at these things), but taking the time to polish a few chips? *sigh*.
So, sorry! Canna help.
