This picture has nothing to do with my post, other than the fact that it was taken in June...
Chinese astrology says we each have a lucky month and an unlucky month. My father always said he had an unlucky month.
I’m sure that others out there feel that they have an unlucky month.
June is my unlucky month.
Okay, okay, before you get on my butt—yes, K was born in June—yea, of course I love my son—yes, I understand it might hurt his feelings for me to talk this way…Guess what? Despite K’s appearance on this Earth, some really bad things have happened in June.
- Car broken into? June.
- Car dying/needs fixin’/needs to be tagged and I spent 4 hours in the DMV trying to clear up my married name issues? June.
- Social Security office claiming they’ve messed up your name AND your social security number due to your foreign marriage certificate? June.
- Basement flood? June.
- Court summons? June.
- Crazy plane rides? June.
- Office moves from H-E-double…June.
- Power going out for a week due to a massive storm? Well, mostly July, but it did start in June.
- Car wrecks involving semi trucks? Hospital trips? Stitches? JUNE!
A grand professor from my undergrad who taught classical mythology made a point to ‘mock’ Thebes. You know, Thebes. Where bad things happen to good people. Like Oedipus. Thebes is a place where you feel like you just can’t catch a break.
J and I started calling June my Thebes month.
And then, last year, something happened. I started a new job. I started a new life. We listed our house on the market. We stared my fears in the face, and laughed at our prior bad luck. Things were going well. In June.
That’s not to say that there weren’t some minor glitches. Everyone has minor glitches. It’s just to be expected. The tire didn’t actually hit my windshield when the car in front of me had a blowout on highway 63. It just grazed it, and flew on.
It seemed as if we had broken the Thebes month curse. That didn’t stop me from facing this June with just a touch of trepidation. It could have just been the universe toying with us; giving us a year off and making this June just THAT much more unexpected.
Then, at the first of the month, this month, JUNE:
The check engine light came on in my car. Usually I just ignore it and it goes off (Yes, the mechanic actually told me to do this). This time, it didn’t go off. It needed to go in.
Anthony’s school contacted us to let us know that summer school would not, in fact, be held there as planned. Asbestos had been found in the building and needed to be removed. We would have to find another summer school, six weeks after the registration period closed.
J got sick.
The Nana got sick. With some completely different nasty thing.
And yet…
Things are starting to fix themselves with little intervention from me. There are some problems, but the fixes have been relatively simple. People have helped me out. I feel as if there is a Guardian Angel watching over me.
Perhaps the spell has been broken, the curse lifted, the month of June to be my Thebes no more!
Knock on wood, of course.
At least the mechanic says my car runs like a whole new car. Let’s just hope that it is the kind that runs good!
